Chef David Chang hosts a new CNN travel series called "The Detour with David Chang."

The six-part show begins airing Sunday.

In each episode, Chang drives across the US with a companion.

They eat at local restaurants.

The show's motto is: "All we've got is a destination. Everything else is a detour."

Chang's companions include director Cord Jefferson, comedian Cristela Alonzo and Milk Bar creator Christina Tosi.

He eats Filipino food in Las Vegas, Czech pastry in Texas and Haitian food in Miami.

Chang said he wanted to taste anything that looked interesting.

He did this even when producers disagreed.

He said getting out of your comfort zone reminds you that there is much more out there.

The show focuses on finding hidden gems through locals.

It does not focus on naming the best restaurants.

CNN executive Amy Entelis said Chang is the first chef to host a CNN original series since Anthony Bourdain.

Bourdain died in 2018.

Chang said he is paid to eat and spend time with friends.

He called it a dream job.
