Alex Gibney’s documentary “Musk” is playing in select theaters in New York and Los Angeles.
It expands nationwide on Friday.
Elon Musk has attacked Gibney on X, calling him an “idiot” and a “horrible human.”
He also called him a “shill for the far left” and a “tinfoil hat crackpot.”
Musk has reportedly not seen the film.
The film’s distributor, Bleecker Street, could not run paid ads on several major platforms.
As of Sept. 25, YouTube, Meta, TikTok and X had all refused.
YouTube and Meta have since reversed course, saying the content had been flagged as “political.”
There are also concerns about whether “Musk” will land on HBO as planned after the Skydance merger.
Gibney said Musk could call Larry or David Ellison to block it.
Musk’s camp has also threatened lawsuits.
Gibney is fighting back on X, including through a new account called @muskfilmfacts.
He said his film is about a “free-speech absolutist” who threatened a lawsuit to stop it from being seen.
Gibney spent nearly four years making the film, which runs nearly four hours.
It covers Musk’s rise from Silicon Valley through SpaceX, Tesla and DOGE.
Musk did not sit for an interview.
Instead, Gibney’s team made a computer-generated Musk that speaks to the camera.
The voice and words are Musk’s own, taken from recordings, with AI used to sync his mouth.
The film includes a text exchange between Musk and Ashley St. Clair about “10,000 lasers in space.”
Musk supporters have used it to discredit the film, though the film does not claim the satellites interfered in the election.
