President Donald Trump said on Friday that he is banning CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House.

He blamed what he called their "fake news" and unfavorable coverage.

He also threatened that more media bans could follow.

Trump did not explain how the ban would work.

Speaking later in the Oval Office, Trump said the outlets were "fake news."

He added that the country needs honest news.

CNN said it stands behind its White House team and their fair, accurate reporting.

The network said the ban would be an illegal attack on a right protected by the Constitution.

Politico said it would keep reporting fairly and defend its First Amendment rights.

MS NOW did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The move follows Trump's decision last year to keep reporters out of the Oval Office and Air Force One.

That was retaliation for an outlet's refusal to use his new name for the Gulf of Mexico.

Reporters sued, and that case is ongoing.

Trump has also taken legal action against The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and the BBC.

Banning CNN could disrupt the traditional five-network TV pool that travels with the president.

A 1977 court ruling said the White House cannot deny press access based on coverage.

A federal judge ruled the government cannot punish reporters over editorial decisions.

However, an appeals court paused most of that ruling.

The case is still pending.
