Chinese officials said on Friday that Tesla and some Chinese carmakers are recalling more than 4 million cars.
Most of the cars have door handle safety problems.
Tesla is recalling about 2.98 million electric cars.
These cars are made in China or brought from other countries.
The cars include Model 3, Model Y, Model X, and Model S.
Chinese media say this is the biggest recall this year.
The regulator said that in very bad situations, the handles can stop people from opening doors.
This can happen after a big crash when the power stops.
People cannot get out.
Rescuers cannot get in.
Tesla will change the software to make the risk smaller, the regulator said.
Xiaomi is recalling more than 390,000 cars.
Leapmotor is recalling over 370,000 cars.
Geely and XPENG are also recalling some cars.
The reasons are the same.
The cars have door handle problems.
In February, China said it will ban hidden car door handles next year.
These flat handles are common on Tesla and many Chinese electric cars.
The official People's Daily newspaper said the big recall is a safety change before the 2027 ban.
It said competition in the new energy car business should be about safety, not just new ideas.
