President Donald Trump said Tuesday he paused U.S. tariffs.
The tariffs were 50%.
They were on $20 billion of Canadian imports.
The pause is for three days.
He told people on his social media site.
He did this less than two hours before the tariffs started.
Trump said the pause came from a deal.
Canada and the U.S. made the deal.
They still need to finish the papers.
The tariffs would hit Canadian things.
Examples are hockey sticks and tongue depressors.
Canada said it would fight back.
It would put its own taxes on U.S. goods.
That could make the trade fight worse.
The two countries traded $880 billion last year.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said they made big progress.
But important work is still there.
He said Canada agreed to the three-day wait.
Talks will go on.
Carney and Trump talked on the phone twice.
They talked in the last two days.
One call was Tuesday afternoon.
Both sides had reasons to stop the tariffs.
Last year, almost 72% of Canada's goods went to the U.S.
The Trump team also worried about prices.
U.S. people might pay more.
This was before the midterm elections in November.
The U.S. used Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930.
It is a law never used before.
The law lets tariffs go up to 50%.
It applies to countries that hurt U.S. business.
