Weil die US-Regierung wieder die Rückzahlung von Studienkrediten verlangt, sinkt die Kreditwürdigkeit von Millionen Amerikanern schnell. Wenn jemand 90 Tage lang nicht zahlt, melden die Kreditfirmen dies den Auskunfteien. Das schadet der Kreditwürdigkeit stark, fast so viel wie eine Privatinsolvenz.

Es könnte schwieriger oder teurer werden, Kredite für Autos, Häuser oder Kreditkarten zu bekommen. Auch andere Finanzdienstleistungen könnten betroffen sein. Die Federal Reserve Bank of New York berichtete, dass im ersten Quartal 2025 über drei Millionen Menschen mit Studienkrediten plötzlich schlechtere Kreditbewertungen hatten.

Im März 2020 hat das US-Bildungsministerium die Rückzahlung von staatlichen Studienkrediten wegen der Pandemie gestoppt. Die Zahlungen wurden 2023 nach einem Jahr Pause wieder aufgenommen. Die Trump-Regierung hat aber Ende 2024 wieder damit begonnen, die noch nicht bezahlten Studienkredite einzufordern.
