Laut dem US-Handelsministerium sind die Einzelhandelsumsätze in den USA im Mai um 0,9% gesunken, nachdem sie im April bereits um 0,1% zurückgegangen waren. Der Hauptgrund dafür war ein starker Rückgang der Autoverkäufe. Im März waren die Verkäufe noch gestiegen, weil viele Verbraucher versucht hatten, den geplanten 25%igen Importzoll von Präsident Trump auf importierte Autos und Autoteile zu vermeiden.

Obwohl das Vertrauen der Verbraucher gesunken ist, könnten die stabile Inflation und die niedrige Arbeitslosigkeit dazu führen, dass die Menschen in den nächsten Monaten weiterhin Geld ausgeben. Ohne Benzin, Autos und Restaurants sind die Verkäufe im letzten Monat um 0,4% gestiegen. Das zeigt, dass die Verbraucher immer noch Dinge kaufen, die sie nicht unbedingt brauchen. Viele Bereiche haben zwar weniger verkauft, aber Online-Shops, Bekleidungsgeschäfte und Möbelhäuser konnten ihre Verkäufe steigern. Der Rückgang der Verkäufe im Einzelhandel hängt damit zusammen, dass viele befürchten, Trumps Zölle könnten die Preise erhöhen.
