In the US, shops sold 0.9% less in May, after a small drop in April, according to the Commerce Department. This happened because fewer people bought cars, after many people bought them in March. They bought cars then to avoid new taxes on imported cars. People are not feeling as confident about the future, but prices are stable and not many people are unemployed. This could mean people will still spend a reasonable amount of money in the next few months. If you don't include petrol, cars, and restaurants, sales went up a little last month. This shows people are still buying some things they don't really need. Sales went down in many places, but online shops, clothes shops, and furniture shops sold more. The drop in sales may be because people are worried about higher prices due to the new taxes.
