Many states and Washington D.C. have sued a company called 23andMe. They want to stop the company from selling people's private genetic information without their permission. This lawsuit started because another company wants to buy 23andMe, which is having money problems. The states say that personal information, like DNA and health records, should only be sold if each person gives clear permission. 23andMe started in 2006. It helps people find out about their family history and relatives using a spit test. But the company has not made much money since 2021. So, it fired many employees and went bankrupt. Another company, Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, wants to buy 23andMe for $256 million. They have promised to follow 23andMe's privacy rules. An independent person will check the sale to make sure it protects customer privacy.
