The constant waves of tariffs, along with sporadic trade actions, have made companies worldwide feel anxious. Consequently, some well-known retailers in the United States have already increased prices or cautioned about future price hikes.

In recent years, President Donald Trump imposed new import taxes on nearly all of America's trading partners and a range of specific industries, prompting retaliatory tariffs from some targeted countries, particularly China. Although many of the heaviest tariffs have since been suspended or reduced, a significant number of levies continue to increase the burden on businesses.

This is because companies that buy products made abroad have to pay tariffs, which increases their costs. Often, these higher costs are passed on to shoppers. Trump believed his new tariffs would bring manufacturing and money back to the U.S. However, because many goods we buy today rely on global supply chains, economists had already warned that these widespread tariffs would cause prices to rise, from groceries to car repairs.

Many companies, along with their customers, are already acknowledging this reality. Here are some well-known retailers that have recently announced or are expected to announce price increases due to the ongoing trade war:

Despite Walmart mitigating some tariff risks by sourcing two-thirds of its goods in the US, they haven't been entirely spared. Company executives stated on Thursday that higher prices started appearing on Walmart shelves in late April, with increases accelerating this month. However, the biggest impact is expected in June and July, coinciding with the peak back-to-school shopping season.

The company's CFO, John David Rainey, pointed out that the prices of many essential goods are increasing. To illustrate, the price of bananas imported from Costa Rica has risen from 50 cents to 54 cents per pound. He also anticipates that a Chinese-manufactured car seat currently selling for $350 at Walmart could potentially increase by another $100.

Earlier this month, Mattel, the company that makes Barbie dolls and Hot Wheels cars, announced that they would also have to raise prices "where necessary" to offset the cost of tariffs.

This toy company manufactures 40% of its products in China. On May 5th, it warned of impending price increases – this came before the 90-day grace period during which the US and China agreed to temporarily reduce most of the excessive tariffs. However, tariffs on goods from China remain higher than before President Trump began increasing them last month.

In their most recent financial report call, Mattel stated their intention to move production of approximately 500 product types from Chinese manufacturers to suppliers in other countries this year, compared to 280 last year. For some of their more popular toys, the company also indicated they would be looking for factory partnerships in multiple countries.

In early May, Microsoft increased the recommended retail prices worldwide for its Xbox consoles and controllers. For example, the Xbox Series S now starts at $379.99 in the US, an $80 increase from its launch price of $299.99 in 2020. The more powerful Xbox Series X will now sell for $599.99, a $100 rise from its previous price of $499.99.

In a recent Xbox support update on May 1st, Microsoft acknowledged the difficulties arising from recent changes, stating, "We understand that these changes are challenging." Rather than directly mentioning tariffs, the technology giant attributed the adjustments to broader "market conditions and the rising cost of development."

Besides the US, Microsoft has also announced adjusted Xbox pricing for Europe, the UK, and Australia. The company stated that updates would be rolled out to all other countries as well. Furthermore, Microsoft anticipates raising prices on select new first-party games to $79.99 during the upcoming holiday season.

Last month, both e-commerce giants Temu and Shein issued almost identical notices announcing price adjustments, citing "recent changes in global trade regulations and tariffs" as the reason.

Since late April, shoppers have noticed price increases on many goods, especially ahead of the May 2nd expiration of a duty-free rule for low-value Chinese imports that online retailers have long benefited from. While a recent US-China agreement has eased some of the pressure, these products still face tariffs; for example, low-value parcels from China shipped via US postal services are now subject to a 54% tariff, down from 120%.

Even before this grace period, Temu appeared to have already shifted away from shipping directly from China, instead using its existing American warehouses. The retailer, owned by the Chinese e-commerce company PDD Holdings, continues to promote a wide array of goods from "local" warehouses, emphasizing that these items are "tariff-free" for US consumers. Meanwhile, Shein, headquartered in Singapore, currently displays a banner on its checkout page stating: "Tariffs are included in the price you pay. You’ll never have to pay extra at delivery."

The tool manufacturer Stanley Black & Decker stated that they had already adjusted prices in April due to rising tariffs, and they anticipate a further price increase in the July-September quarter.

Last month, P&G stated they would do their best to mitigate the high costs resulting from tariffs, including adjusting their sourcing to avoid them. However, the company suggested that consumers could see price increases as early as July.
