据代表星巴克美国雇员的工会,“星巴克工人联合会”称,自周日以来,美国120家分店已有超过2000名咖啡师开始罢工,以此抗议公司新出台的着装规定。

Starting this week, Starbucks has updated its dress code for employees, specifically regarding what they can wear under the iconic green apron. The new guidelines require staff at company-owned and licensed stores in the US and Canada to wear plain black shirts, along with khaki, black, or dark blue jeans.

Under the previous dress code, baristas were allowed to wear a wider range of dark colors and patterned shirts. Starbucks states that the updated guidelines will make their signature green aprons stand out more, contributing to a familiar and welcoming atmosphere for customers as they strive to create a friendlier store environment.

However, Starbucks Workers United, which represents employees at 570 of Starbucks' 10,000 company-operated stores in the US, believes that dress code policies should be decided through collective bargaining.

Summers and others also criticized the company for selling Starbucks-branded clothing on its internal website, which employees are now prohibited from wearing at work. Starbucks stated that it would give each employee two free black T-shirts when the new dress code was announced.

On Wednesday, the Starbucks Workers United union announced that a total of 1,000 employees had walked out at 75 stores across the US. Starbucks responded that the strike had a limited impact on its 10,000 US locations, with some stores experiencing closures lasting less than an hour due to the action.

Starbucks stated in a statement that, "It would be more productive if the union focused on returning to negotiations with the same energy they're putting into protesting uniform policies like wearing black shirts. Today, over 99% of our stores are operating normally and serving customers throughout the week."

Reactions to the dress code among Associated Press readers were mixed. Some felt that Starbucks baristas had little reason to complain, as many retailers require employees to adhere to a dress code. Others argued that Starbucks should focus on improving drink quality and pricing, as well as ensuring employee satisfaction, rather than being overly concerned with employee attire.

Maddie Mucklow, who manages a Starbucks store in Seattle, has expressed her support for the new regulation.

穆克洛表示:“坦率地说,我认为这次着装规定的改变确实给门店员工带来了一些挑战。但与此同时,它也为我们提供了一个更加统一的标准,让我们在展现个性的同时,更好地体现团队合作精神。”

Since 2021, Starbucks Workers United has been actively campaigning to unionize Starbucks stores across the United States. Although Starbucks and the union agreed to resume negotiations in February 2024, they have yet to reach a contractual agreement.

This week, the labor union announced it has filed a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board, alleging that Starbucks failed to collectively bargain over the new dress code.
