As per the Starbucks Workers United, the union representing the ubiquitous coffee purveyor's U.S. baristas, in excess of 2,000 employees across 120 Stateside locations have initiated a work stoppage commencing Sunday, registering their discontent with the corporation's newly instated sartorial dictates.
Effective Monday, Starbucks instituted revised sartorial constraints governing employee attire beneath the iconic green apron, stipulating, via the updated dress code, that personnel in corporately operated and licensed establishments throughout the United States and Canada must now adhere to a strict uniform of solid black shirts paired with khaki, black, or denim trousers of an indigo or darker hue.
Under the prior sartorial code, baristas were permitted a broader palette of dark tones and patterned shirts; Starbucks posits that the revised regulations will not only accentuate the verdant apron, but also cultivate a sense of familiarity for patrons amidst the company's endeavors to foster a more welcoming and congenial ambiance within its establishments.
Conversely, Starbucks Workers United, representing employees at 570 company-operated stores out of Starbucks' 10,000 US locations, posits that sartorial regulations should be subject to determination via collective bargaining, thereby ensuring worker representation in the establishment of dress codes.

Summers, among others, has also castigated the corporation for purveying Starbucks-branded apparel on its internal web portal, garments which employees are now proscribed from wearing whilst on duty; this follows Starbucks' declaration, concomitant with the announcement of the revised sartorial code, that it would bestow upon each employee two complimentary black T-shirts.

Today, in excess of 99% of our establishments are operating at full capacity, providing uninterrupted service to our clientele throughout the week."
The Associated Press's readership evinced a spectrum of opinions regarding this sartorial code, with some positing that Starbucks baristas have scant grounds for grievance, given the prevalence of mandated attire in the retail sector; conversely, others contended that Starbucks should prioritize ameliorating beverage quality and pricing strategies, alongside ensuring employee contentment, rather than fixating excessively on personnel appearance.
Maddie Mookro, a Seattle-based Starbucks store manager, voiced her support for the newly implemented ordinance.

Since 2021, the Starbucks Workers United has spearheaded a concerted unionisation drive across US stores; however, despite a tentative resumption of negotiations slated for February 2024, Starbucks and the union remain entrenched, devoid of any contractual consensus.
This week, the union lodged a formal complaint with the National Labor Relations Board, alleging that Starbucks had failed to engage in collective bargaining regarding the imposition of a novel dress code, thereby contravening established labor practices.
