Sotheby's stopped selling special jewels. The jewels were linked to Buddha. India said no to the sale.
The jewels for sale were very old. They were from around 240-200 BC. They were found in India in 1898.
India's government told Sotheby's Hong Kong to stop selling the statue. They said the sale was against India's rules and international rules.
The letter said the items are important for India and Buddhists. They want the items to come back to India. They also want the company to say sorry.
Peppé is the great-grandson of William Peppé from Britain. William Peppé found the old things.
India said in the letter: If you don't listen, we will go to court. We will also tell people that you sell old things from a bad time.
Sotheby's said the sale will happen later. They agreed with the sellers.
We can talk together now, and we will tell you news when we have it.
Some pages on the Sotheby's website for the sale were gone on Wednesday.
India's culture group said on Facebook they are happy the sale stopped because they helped.
