Starbucks workers did not like the new rules for clothes and more workers stopped working Thursday.
Many Starbucks workers have stopped working. They are not happy with the new rules about what they can wear. This has happened at many stores in the U.S. since Sunday. A group that helps the workers said that more than 2,000 workers are striking in 120 stores.
From Monday, Starbucks workers have new rules for clothes under their aprons. In the U.S. and Canada, they must wear a black shirt and khaki, black, or blue jeans or pants.
Before, baristas could wear more dark colors and patterns. Now, Starbucks wants green aprons to be seen easily and make customers feel welcome.
Starbucks workers in a union said they want to talk about the dress code. The union speaks for workers in many Starbucks stores.
Paige Summers works at Starbucks in Hanover, Maryland. She says Starbucks is not doing well. She thinks Starbucks should listen to the people who make coffee. Now, Starbucks is thinking about other things, like new rules for clothes. Paige says customers do not care about clothes if they wait a long time for coffee.
Some people said the company was wrong to sell clothes with the Starbucks name. These were clothes that workers could not wear at work anymore. Starbucks said they would give two free black shirts to each worker when they told them about the new rules for clothes.
On Wednesday, the Starbucks Workers Union said 1,000 workers stopped working at 75 shops in the U.S. Starbucks said the strike did not change much at its 10,000 U.S. shops. They said some shops closed for less than one hour because of the strike.
Starbucks said the union should talk to them instead of protesting. Most of their stores are open and serving customers.
People who read the news had different ideas about the rules for clothes at Starbucks. Some said the workers should not complain, because other shops also have rules for clothes. Other people said Starbucks should make better drinks for a better price and make the workers happy, and not worry about their clothes.
Maddie Mucklow works at a Starbucks in Seattle. She likes the new rules.
Mucklow said, "I think the new clothes rule was hard for the people at my shop. But it helps us know how to dress well and still be ourselves."
Since 2021, workers at Starbucks in the U.S. have been joining a union. Starbucks and the union are talking, but they have not made a deal yet. They will meet again in February 2024.
The workers' group said they told the labor board that Starbucks did not talk about the new rules for clothes.
