When President Trump talks about trade, people don't understand the rules.
Trump says the USA does not need agreements. He can sign many agreements. He wants fair deals for everyone. He only cares about the USA market. His team can talk about a deal. He may put taxes on imports.
It is hard for me to understand it, Chad Bown said in an email.
Trump wrote a book called "The Art of the Deal". Some people think he has a good plan. But many people are worried. The stock market is not stable. Companies are not hiring new workers. People don't know what will happen. Trump says new factories and jobs will come soon.
Trump wants to keep some taxes on things from other countries. He thinks this will give money to the government. But other countries want to stop these taxes when they make a deal.
Trump said tariffs are good. He said they can make the country rich and pay debt. They can also lower taxes for people.
This year, the U.S. government got a lot of money from taxes on things from other countries. It was more money than last year. This money could get much bigger. There are different taxes. Some taxes are 10%. Taxes on things from China are 145%. Taxes on steel and cars are 25%.
Trump wanted to pay back money and make taxes lower. He needed to get a lot of money from taxes on things from other countries. But if this hurt the country's money, he would get less money. It would be very hard to do this without hurting the country's money.
The US government says 17 countries want to talk about trade. They wrote down what they can agree on. Talking about these points is the first step for trade talks.
But other leaders don't know what Trump wants or how a deal could work.
The Canadian leader talked to Mr Trump. He said the trade deal needs to be better. This is because of the taxes Mr Trump put on things from Canada.
Some things need to change, Carney said.
High taxes between China and the U.S. make talking hard.
The U.S. and China will meet in Switzerland this weekend. They want to stop problems and have good talks.
China makes many things and sells them to other countries. China does not buy many things from other countries. The U.S. wants to make trade more fair. The U.S. puts taxes on some things from other countries.
China is a big part of this trade problem, Bessent said this week. What will happen with China?
China says the US should stop bad words and taxes to talk.
Lin said on Tuesday: "If the U.S. wants to talk and fix the problem, it must stop being mean. It should talk to China like friends, be nice, and help both countries."
On Wednesday, someone asked Trump if he would make taxes on China less to talk. Trump said, "No."
The president said China was wrong. He said he did not ask for talks.
Does Congress need to say yes to deals?
That is not always correct.
Trump put taxes on things from other countries. He did not ask Congress. He used an old rule. People are angry and are going to court. Trump's team says they can change the taxes again without Congress.
Before, presidents made small deals about trade with countries like China and Japan.
Trump wants other countries to change their trade rules.
The report said the deal needs Congress to say yes.
Is it a good deal if Trump does it alone?
Trump might make deals in his country. He might put taxes on things from other countries.
Maybe Trump will not use the new taxes if other countries give him things. He gives up nothing. But maybe Trump will stop the taxes and not get much back.
Trump asks for a lot and then changes his mind. Other countries want to talk about trade, but he says no.
