Prime Minister Mark Carney stated on Monday that fifty investigators are examining a fire at a Canadian military base, which has claimed the lives of four soldiers and left a further 39 injured.

Meanwhile, mounting questions are being raised as to why training continued to proceed despite officials' awareness that a fire was already burning nearby.

Speaking at Parliament in Ottawa, Carney stated that the Canadian Forces National Investigation Service is leading the investigation, with support from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, in order to establish the circumstances of the tragedy that occurred on Saturday at the military base in Wainwright, Alberta.

Members of Parliament observed a moment of silence before Carney addressed the House of Commons, and the Leader of the Opposition likewise paid tribute.

"A fire was blazing within the training area.

Driven by ferocious winds, the flames advanced nearly a kilometre in under a minute, reaching the very spot where the soldiers had gathered," Carney said.

He stated that investigators have yet to ascertain what exactly ignited the grassland fire.

"We will establish the cause of this terrible tragedy in the swiftest and most transparent manner possible," Carney subsequently told reporters.

The blaze engulfed soldiers of the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, along with Army reservists who were conducting live-fire training at the time.

As of Monday, nineteen of the injured remained in critical condition.

Pierre Poilievre, the Conservative opposition leader, who represents Wainwright in Parliament, was touring the town; according to him, many had sustained severe burns and would require intensive care for weeks, if not months.

He warned that their lives might never return to normal.

Major-General Wade Rutland said on Sunday that although military officials had been aware of the fire for several hours, they judged the blaze to be under control and therefore permitted the training to continue until the wind abruptly shifted.

Roughly 84 of Charlie's soldiers were undergoing training at two separate locations: one for throwing hand grenades, and the other for rehearsing assaults on simulated enemy positions.

The blaze subsequently swept through the second area.

Carney stated that the soldiers were intensifying their preparations for a mission next spring, with a view to reinforcing the Canadian NATO troops serving in Latvia.

Rutland stated that investigators will determine whether it was the wind that drove the flames towards the soldiers or whether the fire spread stealthily through the vegetation without being detected; they will also examine whether military safety procedures require revision.

The military has confirmed the identities of the fallen as follows: Sergeant Morgan Wang of Edmonton; Private Sean Farrell of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan; Private Aidan Goulding of North Vancouver, British Columbia; and Private Hayden Lakemac of Langley, British Columbia.

Carney recalled that Goulding was someone who willingly took on daunting challenges, while Wong was someone on whom his family could always rely.

He went on to say that Farrell and Lake-Mark were close friends, and that Lake-Mark was resolutely committed to a career in law enforcement.

Poilievre recalled that he had encountered Goulding at the Canada Day celebrations at the base in July, when a group of young soldiers came up to have their photograph taken with him.

After the tragedy on Saturday, someone sent him that photograph, thereby confirming that Goulding was among the deceased.

Poilievre also stated that he had heard reports of soldiers rushing into the flames to rescue their comrades, and he lauded such conduct as an act of extraordinary courage.

Military liaison officers are assisting families at hospitals in Edmonton, Calgary, Red Deer and Wainwright; mental health teams and chaplains are likewise providing support to soldiers and their families.

On Sunday, Carney ordered that flags at all federal buildings across the country be flown at half-mast to mourn the four fallen soldiers.

Flowers were laid before Wainwright's century-old war memorial — a stone clock tower dedicated to commemorating the fallen of successive conflicts.

The tower has survived to this day, having endured the devastating fire that ravaged central Wainwright in 1929.

"The purpose for which they trained was to defend Canada and to serve Canada.

And now, by contrast, it is Canada that serves them," Carney said.
