The UK banned trade with Israeli settlements in the West Bank on Tuesday.

The West Bank is land that Israel controls.

Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband said the government blames "settler terrorists."

He said they are doing "ethnic cleansing" of Palestinians there.

The ban stops imports of goods from settlements.

It also stops services like money for building and ads.

France and Canada said they will do the same thing.

The three countries said settlement growth and settler violence are a direct danger to a two-state solution.

Israel was angry.

It said it will close the British consulate in Jerusalem.

The ban will probably not change the economy much.

Settlements send out few goods.

But it is a strong sign of disagreement from close friends.

Israel also said it will send UK representatives away from a military center.

It will stop UK training of Palestinian security forces.

It also stopped a group of British lawmakers from entering.

Miliband said he feels "a deep sense of shame" about what is happening in Palestine.

He said the UK now sees Israel's control of the West Bank as illegal.

This includes the settlements.

Israel's president called the ban a "grave miscalculation."

The US ambassador to Israel said it is unfair.

Some UK people said the ban could help Israel's prime minister.

They also said it could cause more attacks against Jewish people.
