The U.S. military reports it is engaging targets within Iran as hostilities reignite following a month-long hiatus from armed operations.

U.S. Central Command said on Tuesday that the strikes "follow recent attempted attacks by the IRGC against commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and against American service members deployed to the region."

On Sunday, the U.S. military reported that it had struck rocket launchers on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz.

In response, Iran launched missiles at U.S. positions in Jordan, all of which were intercepted, while the United Arab Emirates stated that it had intercepted an Iranian drone over its territorial waters.

President Donald Trump acknowledged on Monday that further strikes could prove necessary.

Trump asserted that the combined U.S. and Israeli bombardment has reduced Iran to “a failed nation.”

He contended that a substantial portion of its political leadership has been eliminated, its economy is reeling under surging inflation, and its military has been left in ruins.

Nevertheless, Trump conceded that additional strikes could prove necessary.

"That does not preclude our resorting to physical force," Trump informed the press.

"We shall see how events unfold."

The United States and Iran have been involved in an intermittent conflict for over six months, with the recent pause in fighting lasting a month.

A return to open warfare would be dangerous for the region, where Iran has attacked U.S. military bases and infrastructure in Gulf countries since the conflict began.

Iranian state television reported the sound of explosions in the southern port city of Bandar Abbas, though it refrained from offering any further details.

The renewed hostilities also follow indications that Trump changed his approach last month, shifting toward economic sanctions and pledging an "economic D-Day" against a nation that has withstood nearly five decades of severe American restrictions.

The Trump administration argued that it was only a matter of time and that striking the right economic target would push Tehran to its breaking point.

At the same time, however, U.S. stockpiles of advanced weapons have been shrinking, and the war has been unpopular among Americans, which could make Republicans vulnerable in November's midterm elections.

The U.S. military has sought to present the renewed fighting as limited in scope.

In a statement on X on Monday, Central Command said its attacks on Iranian targets the previous day were narrowly aimed at preventing IRGC forces from laying new mines in the Strait of Hormuz.

"U.S. forces took limited, precise action against IRGC minelaying forces posing an imminent threat in the Strait of Hormuz," Central Command stated.

"In essence, Iran created the threat and the U.S. military eliminated it to protect civilian mariners, commercial shipping, and the free flow of global commerce."

Central Command reiterated on Tuesday that its strikes were conducted solely in response to Iranian aggression targeting commercial vessels and American personnel in the region.
