After Iran launched a limited missile attack on a U.S. military base in Qatar, and then a missile attack on Israel that caused deaths, both Israel and Iran agreed to a ceasefire plan proposed by the U.S. President on Tuesday. This agreement aims to end their 12-day conflict, which has caused instability in the Middle East. This happened after Israel also carried out many airstrikes across Iran before dawn.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israel had agreed to a ceasefire with Iran, working together with the Trump administration. He told the security cabinet on Monday evening that Israel had achieved all its goals in the twelve-day operation against Iran. These goals included removing the threat from Iran's nuclear and ballistic missile programs, significantly damaging Iran's military leaders and government buildings, and taking control of Tehran's airspace. Netanyahu stated that Israel would respond strongly to any breaking of the ceasefire.
Strong Israeli air strikes continued in Iranian cities until just before 4 a.m. After that, Iran fired missiles at Israel as the sun came up, making Israelis go into bomb shelters. These attacks killed at least five people and injured eight others, according to Israel's Magen David Adom rescue services. The Iranian missile attack damaged at least three crowded apartment buildings in Beersheba, police said. Emergency workers found five bodies in one building and are still looking for more. At least 20 people were hurt. Outside, the streets had many burned-out cars, and the area was covered with broken glass and rubble. Hundreds of emergency workers gathered to look for anyone else stuck in the buildings. Police said some people were injured even inside their apartments' strong safe rooms. These rooms are made to protect against rockets and shrapnel, but not direct hits from large missiles.
A direct strike hit the largest city in southern Israel just before Trump announced a ceasefire. This announcement came after Iran launched a limited missile attack on a U.S. military base in Qatar. Iran's attack was in response to America bombing its nuclear sites. Iran had warned the U.S. beforehand, so no one was hurt. Trump announced on Truth Social that the ceasefire, starting around midnight Washington time, would officially end the war. Trump called this conflict the '12 Day War.' This name reminds people of the 1967 Middle East war, known as the 'Six Day War,' where Israel fought against several Arab countries. Trump's choice of name for the conflict has a strong emotional impact on the Arab world, especially for Palestinians.
During the 1967 Six-Day War, Israel took control of the West Bank and East Jerusalem from Jordan, the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula from Egypt, and the Golan Heights from Syria. Although Israel later returned the Sinai Peninsula to Egypt, it still controls the other territories. A senior White House official, who wished to remain anonymous, stated that Trump spoke directly with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to secure the ceasefire. Concurrently, Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and special envoy Steve Witkoff communicated with the Iranians through various channels. The White House asserts that the bombing on Saturday helped convince the Israelis to agree to the ceasefire and that the Qatari government facilitated the agreement. However, the role of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's leader, in the discussions remains unclear, especially given his prior statement on social media that he would not surrender.
Due to Iran's missile attacks, authorities had to close the country's airspace for several hours, affecting emergency flights. Israeli media reported that some flights had to circle over the Mediterranean Sea. Even though Israeli airports have been closed since the war with Iran started, a few emergency flights recently began operating. By early Tuesday, Qatar Airways restarted its flights after Qatar had closed its airspace because of the Iranian attack on Al Udeid Air Base. Flight-tracking data showed commercial planes flying again in Qatari airspace, suggesting that Doha believed the danger to the energy-rich nation was over.
The ongoing conflict has led to many deaths and injuries. In Israel, at least 29 people have died and over 1,000 have been hurt. Israeli attacks on Iran have reportedly killed about 974 people and injured 3,458 others, according to Human Rights Activists, a group based in Washington. This group, which has previously given detailed numbers of casualties from unrest in Iran, like the protests after Mahsa Amini's death in 2022, stated that among those killed, 387 were civilians and 268 were security forces. The U.S. has evacuated around 250 American citizens and their close family members from Israel using government, military, and charter flights that started recently. It is believed that about 700,000 American citizens, mostly those with both U.S. and Israeli citizenship, are currently in Israel.
