On Monday, Thailand started to control its land borders, stopping tourists from going into Cambodia. This happened because the two countries are having a disagreement about their border and are reacting to each other.
After a fight on May 28, where a Cambodian soldier died in a small, disputed area, the relationship between the two countries has gotten worse. Even though both sides have agreed to reduce the tension, they continue to take actions or make threats that keep the situation very tense.
Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra stated on Monday that Thailand will tighten controls at its land borders and stop tourists from leaving. Only students, people needing medical care, and those buying essential goods will be allowed to enter or exit Thailand.
She said the new rules were meant to stop people from going to Cambodia's profitable casinos, but it looked like all visitors would be stopped.
On Monday, the Thai army stated that they had put new rules in place at all land border crossings between Thailand and Cambodia in five areas. They are now only allowing people with essential needs to cross.
Due to a border disagreement, Cambodia has stopped using some Thai internet services and has also blocked electricity and fuel from Thailand. Before this, Cambodia received 30% of its gasoline and other fuels from Thailand.
On Monday, Paetongtarn also stated that Thailand will think about stopping exports that might help scam operations in Cambodia. They will also work with other countries and international organizations to fight cybercrime in Southeast Asia.
Earlier this year, Thailand took steps to stop online scams in Myanmar. They did this by cutting off electricity, internet, and gas to the border towns where these scams were happening.
A UN report in April said that Cambodia is a main center for scam operations. In these operations, workers use the internet to trick people with fake romantic relationships, dishonest investment offers, and illegal gambling.
Paetongtarn has faced criticism for her gentle approach to Cambodia, particularly from right-wing nationalists who have always opposed her father, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
Last week, a phone call between Paetongtarn and Hun Sen, who is the Cambodian Senate President and a former prime minister, was leaked. This caused a lot of anger and led to demands for Paetongtarn to resign.
Critics said she tried to please Hun Sen, who was a long-time friend of her father. They also said she made Thailand look weak by calling a Thai army commander in the disputed border area "an opponent." Because of this, several nationalist groups are planning a protest this week to ask for Paetongtarn's resignation.
