After a difficult 12-day war that caused problems in the Middle East, Israel and Iran agreed on Tuesday to a ceasefire plan suggested by U.S. President Donald Trump. This agreement happened after Iran attacked a U.S. military base in Qatar with a few missiles, as a way to get back at them. Both sides accepted the deal after Iran fired a final set of missiles at Israel, which killed at least five people early on Tuesday. Before that, Israel had launched many airstrikes on different places in Iran before the sun came up.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israel had agreed to a ceasefire with Iran, with support from the US. He informed his security cabinet that Israel had achieved all its goals during the 12-day operation. These goals included reducing the threat from Iran's nuclear and missile programs. Netanyahu also stated that Israel had damaged Iran's military leadership and government buildings and had gained control of Tehran's airspace. He warned that Israel would respond strongly if the ceasefire was broken.
Powerful Israeli attacks continued in Iranian cities until just before 4 a.m. Afterward, Iran launched many missiles, forcing Israelis to quickly find shelter as the sun came up. Israel's Magen David Adom rescue services reported that at least five people died and eight were hurt. Police stated that Iranian missiles killed five people in Israel and damaged at least three apartment buildings in Beersheba. Emergency teams discovered five bodies in one building and were looking for more. At least 20 people were injured. Outside, burnt cars were left in the streets, which were covered with broken glass and debris. Hundreds of emergency workers gathered to search for anyone still stuck in the buildings. Police also mentioned that some people were injured even inside their strong safe rooms. These rooms are made to stop rockets but not direct hits from large missiles.
A major city in southern Israel was hit just before Trump announced a ceasefire. He stated that Israel and Iran had agreed to a full ceasefire. This happened after Iran launched a small missile attack on a U.S. military base in Qatar, as a response to the U.S. bombing their nuclear sites. Iran had warned the U.S. in advance, and no one was injured. Trump announced on social media that the ceasefire, starting around midnight Washington time, would officially end the war. He called the conflict the "12 Day War." This name reminds people of the "Six Day War" in 1967, which is important to the Arab world, especially Palestinians.
During the 1967 war, Israel took the West Bank and East Jerusalem from Jordan, the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula from Egypt, and the Golan Heights from Syria. Israel later gave the Sinai back to Egypt, but it still controls the other areas. A senior White House official, who wanted to stay anonymous, said that Trump spoke directly with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to get the ceasefire. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and special envoy Steve Witkoff talked to Iranian officials in direct and indirect ways. The White House said that the bombing on Saturday helped Israel agree to the ceasefire, and Qatar helped to arrange the deal. It is not clear what role Iran's leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, had in the talks, as he had previously said on social media that he would not give up.
Officials said that Iran's missile attack made them close the country's airspace for important flights for several hours. Some planes had to fly in circles over the Mediterranean Sea, according to Israeli news. Israel's airports have been closed since the war with Iran started, but a few emergency flights recently began arriving and leaving. By early Tuesday, Qatar Airways started its flights again after Qatar closed its airspace because of the Iranian attack on Al Udeid Air Base. Data from flight tracking showed that commercial planes were flying in Qatari airspace again, which suggested that Doha thought the danger to the country was over.
The conflict has led to many deaths and injuries. In Israel, at least 29 people have died and over 1,000 have been hurt. Israeli attacks on Iran have killed at least 974 people and injured 3,458 others, according to Human Rights Activists, a group based in Washington. This group has given detailed numbers of people killed or injured from protests in Iran, including those after Mahsa Amini's death in 2022. They reported that 387 of those who died were civilians and 268 were security forces. The U.S. has helped about 250 American citizens and their close family members leave Israel. They used government, military, and special flights that began recently. It is thought that around 700,000 American citizens, many of whom are also Israeli citizens, are currently in Israel.
