After a period of intense fighting, both Israel and Iran agreed to a ceasefire plan on Tuesday. This plan, put forward by U.S. President Donald Trump, is intended to end their 12-day conflict, which has caused a lot of instability in the Middle East. The agreement was reached after several escalating attacks, including Iran's limited missile strike on a U.S. military base in Qatar and a final missile attack on Israel, which killed at least five people. At the same time, Israel conducted many airstrikes across Iran.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel had reached an agreement for a ceasefire with Iran, which was coordinated with the Trump administration, after a twelve-day operation. He informed the security cabinet on Monday night that Israel had accomplished its goals, including eliminating the threats posed by Iran's nuclear and ballistic missile programs, weakening its military leadership and government facilities, and gaining control of Tehran's airspace. Netanyahu warned that Israel would respond with force to any breach of the ceasefire.
Israeli attacks continued in Iranian cities until just before 4 a.m. After this, Iranian attacks caused Israelis to go into bomb shelters as the sun came up. These attacks killed at least five people and injured eight others, according to Israel's Magen David Adom rescue services. Iranian missiles also killed five people in Israel. Police reported that Iran's attacks damaged at least three crowded apartment buildings in Beersheba. Emergency workers found five bodies in one building and are still looking for more. At least 20 people were hurt. Outside, the streets were full of burnt-out cars, broken glass, and rubble. Hundreds of emergency workers gathered to look for anyone else stuck in the buildings. Police said some people were injured even inside their apartments' strong safe rooms. These rooms are made to protect against rockets and shrapnel, but not direct hits from large missiles.
A major city in southern Israel was struck just before Trump declared a ceasefire. This declaration came after Iran launched a limited missile attack on a U.S. military base in Qatar, in retaliation for America bombing its nuclear facilities. Trump also referred to the conflict as the "12 Day War," which brings to mind the 1967 Mideast war, known as the "Six Day War." This name carries significant emotional weight, particularly for people in the Arab world.
During the 1967 war, Israel took control of the West Bank and East Jerusalem from Jordan, the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula from Egypt, and the Golan Heights from Syria. Although Israel later returned the Sinai Peninsula to Egypt, it still controls the other territories. A senior White House official, who wished to remain anonymous, stated that Trump spoke directly with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to achieve the ceasefire. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and special envoy Steve Witkoff communicated with the Iranians through both direct and indirect channels. The White House has claimed that the Saturday bombing helped convince the Israelis to agree to the ceasefire and that the Qatari government assisted in brokering the agreement. It is uncertain what part Iran's leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, played in the discussions, especially since he had previously stated on social media that he would not surrender.
After Iran's large aerial attack, authorities had to close the country's airspace to emergency flights for several hours. Israeli media reported that some flights had to circle over the Mediterranean Sea. Israel's airports have been mostly closed since the war with Iran started, but a few emergency flights had begun to operate in recent days. By early Tuesday, Qatar Airways started flying again after Qatar closed its airspace because of the Iranian attack on Al Udeid Air Base. Flight-tracking data showed commercial planes flying in Qatari airspace again, which suggested that Doha believed the immediate danger to the nation was over.
The ongoing conflict has caused many deaths. In Israel, at least 29 people have died and over 1,000 have been injured. Israeli attacks on Iran have led to at least 974 deaths and 3,458 injuries, according to Human Rights Activists, a group based in Washington. This group, which has previously documented casualties from Iranian unrest like the 2022 Mahsa Amini protests, stated that among those killed, 387 were civilians and 268 were security forces. The U.S. has evacuated about 250 American citizens and their close family members from Israel using government, military, and charter flights that started recently. It is estimated that around 700,000 American citizens, many of whom are also Israeli citizens, live in Israel.
