On Tuesday, both Israel and Iran agreed to a ceasefire plan put forward by U.S. President Donald Trump, aiming to end their 12-day conflict that had caused instability in the Middle East. This agreement came after Iran's initial limited missile attack on a U.S. military base in Qatar. The decision by both countries to accept the deal happened after Iran launched a final series of missiles at Israel, which killed at least five people early Tuesday morning. At the same time, Israel carried out many airstrikes targeting different places across Iran before dawn.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israel had reached a ceasefire agreement with Iran, in cooperation with the Trump administration. He informed Israel's security cabinet on Monday night that they had accomplished all their aims during the twelve-day operation against Iran. These aims included eliminating the danger posed by Iran's nuclear and ballistic missile programs, weakening Iran's military command and several government sites, and gaining control of Tehran's airspace. Netanyahu warned that Israel would respond strongly to any violation of the ceasefire.
Strong Israeli airstrikes continued in Iranian cities until just before 4 a.m. After this, Iranian missile attacks forced Israelis to go into bomb shelters as the sun came up. Israel's Magen David Adom rescue services reported that these attacks killed at least five people and injured eight others. Iranian missiles caused five deaths in Israel. Police said the Iranian attack damaged at least three crowded apartment buildings in Beersheba. Emergency workers said they found five bodies in one building and were still looking for more. At least 20 people were hurt. Outside, the streets were covered with the remains of burned cars, and there was broken glass and rubble everywhere. Hundreds of emergency workers gathered to search for anyone else stuck in the buildings. Police mentioned that some people were injured even inside their apartments' reinforced safe rooms. These rooms are made to protect against rockets and shrapnel, but they cannot withstand direct hits from ballistic missiles.
A major city in southern Israel was hit just before Trump announced a ceasefire. This happened after Iran launched a limited missile attack on a U.S. military base in Qatar. This attack was in response to the American bombing of Iran's nuclear sites. Iran had warned the U.S. beforehand, and no one was hurt. Trump then announced on Truth Social that a "complete and total ceasefire" would start around midnight Washington time, which he said would officially end the conflict. Trump called this conflict the "12 Day War." This name is very meaningful, especially for Palestinians, because it reminds them of the 1967 "Six Day War."
In the 1967 war, Israel took control of the West Bank and East Jerusalem from Jordan, the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula from Egypt, and the Golan Heights from Syria. Although Israel later gave the Sinai Peninsula back to Egypt, it still controls the other areas. A senior White House official, who wanted to remain anonymous, said that Trump spoke directly with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to achieve the ceasefire. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and special envoy Steve Witkoff talked with the Iranians using both direct and indirect methods. The White House thinks that the bombing on Saturday helped convince the Israelis to agree to the ceasefire, and that the Qatari government helped to arrange the deal. However, it is not clear what part Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's leader, played in the talks, especially since he had previously stated on social media that he would not give up.
After Iran's large aerial attack, authorities had to close the country's airspace for a few hours, which affected emergency flights. Israeli media reported that some flights had to fly in circles over the Mediterranean Sea. Israel's airports have been closed since the war with Iran started, but a small number of emergency flights recently began to arrive and depart. By early Tuesday, Qatar Airways started its flights again after Qatar had closed its airspace because of the Iranian attack on Al Udeid Air Base. Flight-tracking information showed that commercial planes were flying in Qatari airspace once more, suggesting that Doha thought the threat to the energy-rich country was over.
The recent conflict has caused many casualties. In Israel, at least 29 people have died and over 1,000 have been injured. Israeli attacks in Iran have reportedly killed at least 974 people and wounded 3,458 others, according to Human Rights Activists, a group based in Washington that has carefully recorded casualties from unrest in Iran. This group identified 387 civilians and 268 security personnel among those who died. Additionally, the U.S. State Department has confirmed that about 250 American citizens and their immediate families have been evacuated from Israel using government, military, and chartered flights. It is estimated that around 700,000 American citizens, mostly those with dual U.S.-Israeli nationality, are currently in Israel.
