On Monday, Thailand started to control who could cross its land borders, and this included stopping tourists from going into Cambodia, because the two countries are having a disagreement about their border.
After a fight on May 28 where a Cambodian soldier died in a small, disputed area, the relationship between the two countries has gotten worse. Even though both sides have agreed to calm down, they are still taking or threatening actions that are keeping things tense.
On Monday, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra announced that Thailand will increase checks at its land borders and stop tourists from leaving. Only students, those needing medical treatment, and people buying essential items will be allowed to enter or exit the country.
She said the rules were meant to stop people from going to Cambodia's profitable casinos, but it looked like all tourists would be stopped.
On Monday, the Thai army stated that they had put new rules in place at all land border crossings between Thailand and Cambodia in five provinces. They are now stopping everyone from crossing, except for people who have very important reasons.
Because of a border disagreement, Cambodia has stopped using some Thai internet services and has also blocked electricity and fuel from Thailand. Before this, Cambodia got 30% of its gasoline and other fuel from Thailand.
Paetongtarn also said on Monday that Thailand will think about stopping exports that could help scam operations in Cambodia. They will also work with other countries and international groups to stop cybercrime in Southeast Asia.
Earlier this year, Thailand took steps to stop online scams in Myanmar by cutting off electricity, internet, and gas to border towns where these scams were happening.
A UN report in April said that Cambodia is a main place for online scam operations. In these operations, workers trick people using fake romantic relationships, false investment offers, and illegal gambling.
Paetongtarn has been criticized for her mild approach to Cambodia, especially by right-wing groups who have always been against her father, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
Last week, a phone call between Paetongtarn and Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen was leaked. Hun Sen used to be the prime minister of Cambodia for over forty years. This phone call caused a lot of anger and led to calls for Paetongtarn to resign.
Some critics claimed she tried to satisfy Hun Sen, who is a long-time friend of her father. They also stated that she made Thailand appear weak by referring to a Thai army commander in charge of the disputed border area as "an opponent." As a result, several nationalist groups are planning a protest this week to demand Paetongtarn's resignation.
