A chemical factory in Weifang, a city in eastern China, exploded, killing at least five people and injuring 19. Six people are still missing. The explosion happened at a factory owned by Gaomi Youdao Chemical Co., which produces pesticides and medical chemicals. It broke windows in nearby buildings and sent a large cloud of smoke into the air. Students at a nearby school said they smelled something strange after the explosion. More than 230 workers were sent to the site, and a team was sent to check for possible pollution. This event happened after a national meeting that aimed to make the chemical industry safer, which shows that safety problems at work still exist in China. Last year, the Gaomi Youdao factory was praised for managing risks well, as they found and fixed over 800 safety issues.
