Officials said on Wednesday that Israeli attacks in Gaza killed at least 92 people, including women, children, and two journalists. Israel is getting ready to increase its military actions in the area. The destructive war has now been going on for 20 months.
Health officials said that two Israeli airstrikes on Wednesday hit an area in central Gaza. At least 33 people were killed and 86 were injured, including some children. Officials think the real number of deaths is probably higher.
The Israeli army did not immediately say anything about the attacks.
This happened after Israel's leader, Benjamin Netanyahu, said on Wednesday that he was unsure if three hostages, previously thought to be alive in Gaza, were still alive. This statement came a day after the US President, Donald Trump, said that only 21 of the 24 hostages believed to be alive had survived.
The news caused families of the remaining prisoners in Gaza to panic.
More violence happened on Wednesday, shortly after Israel approved a plan to increase its actions in the Palestinian area. This plan includes taking control of Gaza, keeping the land they have taken, making Palestinians move to southern Gaza, and managing how help is given out with private security companies.
Health officials reported that Wednesday's attacks involved two strikes on a busy market area in Gaza City.
Videos shared online reportedly showed what happened after. Dead men were seen, including one still sitting in a chair inside a local Thai restaurant where people met. Several children were also lying still on the ground, covered in blood.
According to Gaza’s media office, journalist Yahya Sobeih was among those killed. He worked for different local news groups. He had recently shared a photo of his new baby daughter on Instagram.
Some people who were badly hurt in the explosions were taken to Al-Shifa Hospital nearby, a spokesperson for the Gaza health ministry told The Associated Press.
Nour Abdu, who was a local journalist, also died. She was reporting on an attack at a school in Gaza City on Wednesday morning, according to the media office.
Officials from Al-Aqsa Hospital said that 27 people died in an attack on a school on Tuesday night. Many displaced Palestinians were staying there. Among those killed were nine women and three children. This school has been hit many times since the war began.
Israel blames Hamas for the deaths, saying Hamas operates from areas where civilians are, like schools.
The war started after Hamas fighters attacked southern Israel, killing 1,200 people and capturing around 250 hostages.
Israel is also calling up tens of thousands of reserve soldiers for the plan. Israel says the plan will happen slowly and only after Trump finishes his visit to the area later this month.
More fighting could cause many more deaths. Israel already controls about half of Gaza, and if it keeps control for a long time, it could become a military occupation. This would make people question how Israel will govern the area, especially as it considers taking over Gaza as planned by Trump.
Palestinian health officials say that Israeli attacks in Gaza have killed over 52,000 people so far. They say that many of these people are women and children, and they count both fighters and people who are not fighters.
