According to a new AP-NORC/AAPI Data poll, as the November 3 midterm elections approach, Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AAPI) adults are becoming increasingly disillusioned with President Donald Trump and the Republican Party, which has given Democrats a marked advantage on major issues such as the economy and health care.

This survey, conducted jointly by AAPI Data and the NORC Center for Public Affairs Research between September 8 and 15, indicates that during Trump's second term, approval among AAPI adults for his economic stewardship has been on a downward trajectory.

Roughly a quarter of AAPI adults approve of his overall job performance, yet only about two in ten express approval of his handling of the economy; at the same time, the overwhelming majority of AAPI adults regard economic issues as among the most critical in the forthcoming election.

Although AAPI adults generally trust the Democratic Party more than the Republican Party on numerous issues, their perceptions of the Democratic Party itself nonetheless remain decidedly mixed.

Rebecca Larocco, a 45-year-old Korean American residing in Corning, Iowa, cast her ballot for Trump in 2016 and likewise leaned Republican in the midterm elections.

While she undoubtedly endorses Trump's immigration policies, the ongoing Iran war's relentless upward pressure on gasoline prices has left her harbouring no small measure of doubt about his handling of the economy.

"Where I am, the price of gas has gone up by nearly $1.50 a gallon," she said.

"I never expected us to get dragged into a war — that was absolutely the last thing anyone anticipated, and I'm not sure … All I can hope is that they deliver on their promises: get our economy back on track and crack down on immigration and crime."

As they take stock of the midterm elections, the economy remains firmly entrenched among the core issues of greatest concern to the overwhelming majority of AAPI adults.

With the ongoing war in Iran driving up gasoline prices and other costs remaining stubbornly high, a profound pessimism about the state of the economy pervades the United States as a whole, with the economy regarded as a top priority in the midterm elections.

This pattern extends to AAPI adults as well—according to polling, roughly nine in ten respondents rank the economy among the most important issues in the upcoming elections, and about eight in ten say the same of the cost of living.

For AAPI adults, the importance of issues such as the economy, the cost of living, and health care far surpasses that of any other issues.

Roughly seven in ten AAPI adults say health care is among the most important issues in the election; yet only about half hold the same view of foreign policy, crime, immigration, election integrity, or climate change.

At the same time, Trump's economic approval rating among AAPI adults has fallen by roughly 10 percentage points over the past year, and other indications likewise suggest that his popularity within this group has somewhat waned.

At the end of 2024, just as the election had drawn to a close, roughly four in ten AAPI adults held a "somewhat" or "very" favourable view of Trump.

As of today, that proportion has slipped to roughly three in ten.

“The data shows that whatever gains he made during the 2024 election — Trump enjoyed a brief honeymoon period after the election and before Inauguration Day — have now largely been wiped out,” said Karthick Ramakrishnan, founder and executive director of AAPI Data.

Len Takahashi, aged 57 and a resident of Universal City, Texas, styles himself a conservative, yet he cast his ballot for the Democrats in each of the past three presidential elections, while opting for the Republicans in midterm contests.

As for the forthcoming midterms, he remains open to any candidate who places the economy front and centre.

"I hope to see policies that serve the best interests of the American public," said Takahashi, a Japanese American.

"This may encompass cutting spending, balancing the US budget, bringing inflation down, working toward building a more robust economy, and ultimately improving the atmosphere between the far left and the far right."

Since Trump's return to the White House, Democrats have made gains—at the expense of Republicans—in the trust that Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) adults place in the handling of numerous key issues.

In a March 2025 poll, AAPI adults were evenly split over which party was better equipped to handle the economy and immigration; as of today, the Democrats' lead on both issues has reached roughly 20 percentage points.

At the same time, roughly two-thirds of AAPI adults hold a "somewhat" or even "very" negative view of the Republican Party, whereas those with a "somewhat" or "very" favorable opinion amount to only about a quarter.

Yet, notwithstanding a rise in trust placed in the Democratic Party on specific issues, AAPI adults' overall impressions of the party remain ambivalent: roughly half (48%) of AAPI adults hold a "somewhat" or "very" negative impression of the Democratic Party, whereas 44% hold a "somewhat" or "very" positive impression.

Another survey conducted by AP-NORC in September among registered voters likewise indicates that, although voters on the whole harbor profound dissatisfaction with Trump and the Republican Party, few believe that either party possesses the capacity to resolve major problems.

Louise Ryder, forty years old, is a Democrat living in Chicago.

She maintains that the Democrats are superior to the Republicans on every issue, yet she candidly admits that she is dissatisfied with how the Democratic Party conducts its governance.

"I don't believe the Democrats have delivered a satisfactory record; I think that, as a party, they are in dire need of numerous changes," she said.

"It is a situation in which one feels profoundly powerless to act—unless sweeping changes occur, neither party will accomplish anything."

Admittedly, some Republicans continue to hold Trump in favourable regard.

James Finley, a 74-year-old resident of Lenox, Massachusetts, remarked that Trump deserves a modicum of forbearance, given that he cannot bring stubbornly high prices to heel overnight.

When it comes to the Republican Party as a whole, however, Finley's assessment is somewhat more censorious.

"They have held the majority for years now," said Finley, who is of Japanese descent.

"In my view, they could have made a greater effort—or indeed a far greater effort—to advance certain bills that I had hoped would be passed."

Even so, he remained steadfastly partisan, in Finlay's words, because "all I hear from the Democrats is that they want to take Trump down."

As Election Day draws near, a great many AAPI adults are deeply troubled by issues such as disinformation, legal challenges to election results, and voter suppression.

Roughly half of AAPI adults say that eligible voters being barred from casting ballots constitutes a "major problem" in American elections, while about two-thirds regard attempts by foreign governments to influence election outcomes as a "major" problem.

Looking ahead to the November elections, roughly half of AAPI adults express themselves as "extremely" or "very" concerned about false or erroneous information regarding candidates, while about half harbor an equivalent degree of apprehension that the election results may face legal challenges.

Finley is not confident that the voting process can be monitored closely enough to prevent undocumented or unregistered individuals from attempting to vote.

Nevertheless, Gao Qiao, a conservative from Texas, is deeply anxious, fearing that Trump may seize the opportunity to manipulate the election.

He stated that he was concerned that, should the midterm election results prove unfavourable to Trump, he would redouble his efforts to amplify the narrative of "a rigged electoral system".

"(He will) make this his foremost priority in diverting the American public's attention," he said.

This poll, conducted between September 8 and 15 among 1,023 Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander adults, drew its sample from NORC's probability-based Amplify AAPI panel — a panel established to be representative of Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities.

The margin of sampling error for all respondents is plus or minus 4.7 percentage points.

The survey is part of an ongoing project devoted to exploring the views of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders, whose perspectives are often underrepresented in other surveys owing to small sample sizes and inadequate linguistic representation.
