The cargo airline operating the aircraft that, over Labor Day weekend, overran the end of a Miami runway, killing five people, forfeited one of its most substantial clients when Amazon suspended its partnership with 21 Air; whether the company will sustain further losses of business while the crash remains under investigation is, as yet, uncertain.

Laden with packages of contact lenses, the Boeing 767, on Sept. 6, made its approach at high speed, then barreled roughly 1,300 feet (396 meters) beyond the runway's end and smashed into a van carrying workers at a plane cleaning company.

All five people who died were in the van.

Five others were hurt.

“In the wake of the tragic incident last weekend, we have devoted ourselves to supporting the investigation and scrutinising some of the attendant circumstances, and we have resolved to suspend our operations with 21 Air, the operator of Flight 7598,” Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel said in a statement.

“We shall persist in our efforts to support the investigation and all those affected.”

The National Transportation Safety Board will scrutinize every conceivable contributing factor to the crash in order to ascertain its cause — encompassing the conduct of the pilots and air traffic controllers, the jet’s maintenance record, the airline’s operational practices, and the inclement weather prevailing at the time of the crash.

The North Carolina-based carrier had operated as an Amazon air cargo partner since 2024, while concurrently servicing DHL.

According to data from aviation analytics firm Cirium, 21 Air leases its fleet of 18 aircraft — comprising 13 Boeing 767s and five 757s — of which no fewer than six are leased from Amazon affiliates and at least three from DHL.

“We remain steadfastly committed to supporting the families and loved ones affected by this accident, and to collaborating closely with the NTSB and all our partners, such as Amazon, as the investigation proceeds,” 21 Air said in a statement.

“We harbour full confidence in our safety policies, procedures and training.”

DHL spokesman Robert Mintz on Monday demurred when asked whether that package hauler would persist in its use of 21 Air, citing “the ongoing investigation and the sensitive nature of the matter.”

"Mintz stated that DHL perpetually evaluates its network and its affiliations with service providers to guarantee that we satisfy both our clientele's demands and our operational prerequisites."

Flight information released by the NTSB on Sept. 9 revealed that one of the pilots had cautioned his counterpart that they were proceeding at excessive speed on their approach for landing and after touchdown.

The aircraft's approach was erratic, and it did not touch down until considerably past its designated point on the runway, thereby curtailing the distance available for deceleration.

A tailwind may have served to propel the plane onward.

The cockpit audio recordings further documented a succession of automated onboard warnings pertaining to the aircraft's rate of descent and the terrain ahead.

The complete transcript of the cockpit exchanges is not to be disclosed until a later stage of the investigation.

The 32-year-old Boeing, originally configured for passenger service, operated for several foreign airlines over the course of more than two decades before undergoing conversion to a cargo aircraft in 2015, according to the flight-tracking site Flightradar24.
