The origins of Labor Day can be traced back to the late 19th century, when activists initially campaigned for the establishment of a day dedicated to honoring workers.
The inaugural U.S. Labor Day celebration occurred in New York City on September 5, 1882, when approximately 10,000 workers participated in a procession organized by the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor.
In the ensuing years, a modest number of cities and states began to enact legislation recognizing Labor Day; nevertheless, it was not until 1894, over a decade later, that President Grover Cleveland signed a congressional act designating the first Monday of September as an official legal holiday.
While many employees enjoy the day off, the majority of large customer-facing enterprises remain operational, often capitalizing on the occasion with promotional discounts to attract shoppers.
The following establishments will be open or closed this Labor Day:
Public institutions—encompassing administrative offices, postal services, the judiciary, and educational establishments—have ceased operations.
U.S. equity markets and banking institutions are slated to remain closed throughout the day on Monday.
Standard FedEx and UPS pickup and delivery services will be suspended on Labor Day, though certain critical services will remain operational at select locations.
Costco, the warehouse membership club, will remain closed on Labor Day; however, the overwhelming majority of major national retailers and grocery chains will operate as usual, with many offering promotional discounts to attract customers.
Operating hours may differ from one location to another, so it is advisable to verify with your local store.
Although many schools have resumed and travel costs have risen due to higher fuel prices linked to the conflict in Iran, millions of Americans will still take to the roads and skies for the final major summer travel weekend.
According to AAA, airfares to leading domestic destinations have climbed nearly 20% year over year, while hotel rates have also seen an uptick.
The automobile club reports that the national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline now stands at just under $4.10, reflecting a 90-cent increase compared to the same period last year.
Nevertheless, for those journeying by sea, AAA indicates that cruises departing from U.S. ports are approximately 4% more affordable than they were a year ago.
The auto club does not issue a comprehensive travel forecast for Labor Day in the way it does for Memorial Day and the Fourth of July.
Nevertheless, AAA does extend some practical guidance to travelers.
AAA advises travelers to remain vigilant about weather forecasts and to inspect their vehicle's tires, battery, and fluid levels before embarking on a road trip.
Moreover, the organization recommends assembling an emergency kit stocked with water, snacks, a flashlight, and jumper cables.
