A 22-year-old college student fatally shot by Pennsylvania police responding to a possible burglary had just realized he was at the wrong residence and was waiting for friends to pick him up when the shooting occurred, his father said on Wednesday.

Police in Upper Pottsgrove Township, northwest of Philadelphia, responded at approximately 12:30 a.m. Sunday to a 911 call reporting a suspected burglary attempt, according to the Montgomery County district attorney’s office.

The office stated that upon arrival, officers discovered Glenwood Pysher IV at the rear of the residence and ultimately fatally shot him.

Glen Pysher, the father of the deceased, said his son and his friends had visited several bars earlier that evening and were splitting up to spend the night in two homes when his son took a wrong turn in the woods.

Based on what he had been told by his son's friends, Pysher believed his son mistakenly tried to enter what he thought was his friend's house.

He said his son was not carrying any weapons, just a phone and a backpack containing clothing and a few beers.

“He attempted to turn the doorknob and, unsurprisingly, startled the homeowner,” he said.

“As far as we can tell, he shouted, ‘Hey! Open the door!’ under the impression that he was at his friend’s residence.”

Pysher then settled onto the back porch and reached out to his friends, who quickly realized he was in the wrong location and set off to locate him.

However, within minutes, they spotted police and emergency vehicles and assumed their friend would be taken into custody for public intoxication.

Instead, he had been shot.

“At 12:32 a.m. my son was on a FaceTime call with his friends that were coming to get him,” he said.

“We were told that my son was shot at 12:35 a.m. So what kind of encounter could have ensued? What kind of communication could that officer have given him?”

A dispatch record from the Montgomery County Department of Public Safety indicates that officers were dispatched at 12:30 a.m. and arrived at the scene at 12:34 a.m.

Upper Pottsgrove Township Police Chief Al Werner declined to disclose any details, including the identities of the officers involved, pending the conclusion of the investigation.

The Montgomery County Detective Bureau is overseeing the inquiry into the shooting, according to the district attorney’s office.

The police shooting in response to a report of a possible break-in is sharply distinguished from several other cases in which residents have shot individuals who mistakenly arrived at their homes.

Pysher was on the cusp of commencing his senior year at Saint Elizabeth University in New Jersey, where he intended to play baseball.

Upon graduation, his ambition was to pursue a career as a high school history teacher and coach.

His father described him as a kindhearted, affectionate child who could be a “knucklehead” yet was always eager to lend a hand to others.

In the aftermath of the shooting, former teammates, coaches, and others have been reaching out to his father via text to share their recollections of him.

“One young man in particular texted me and said, ‘I was going through a lot of really difficult things in my life. I was going the wrong way. And your son is the one who helped me put my life on track,’” the father said.

“He will be sadly missed in his community.”

Pysher stated that police have furnished the family with virtually no information.

On Wednesday, he telephoned to inquire whether he might retrieve his son’s preferred pair of black shoes for the burial, and was informed that such an arrangement could be made.

“Subsequently, I received a callback indicating they needed time to deliberate,” he remarked.

“They remain uncertain as to whether they can grant them to me.”
