For the first time, parts of Alaska are under a heat advisory, a new term the National Weather Service is using instead of "special weather statements." This change aims to better explain how serious and dangerous the weather is, rather than just saying temperatures are unusually high. The first advisory was for Fairbanks, where temperatures were expected to go above 85 degrees Fahrenheit, which is uncommon for June. This new term is not about climate change, but it recognizes that hot weather does affect Alaska, especially in places without air conditioning. Currently, this advisory system is only allowed in Juneau and Fairbanks, but there are plans to expand it to Anchorage. However, even with the heat, temperatures in Anchorage have not yet reached the level needed for a heat advisory.
