Donald Trump wants to make steel from other countries more expensive. This is to help people who work with steel in Pennsylvania.

He also said the tax on aluminum will be 50%. These new taxes will start on Wednesday.

Trump spoke at a steel factory near Pittsburgh. He talked about a plan. A company from Japan will give money to the American steel company. He will tell us more later.

Trump is in Washington. He said he must agree to the deal.

He said, "I need to say yes to the last paper for the Nippon deal. We have not seen it yet. But they said they will do a lot and spend a lot of money."

Trump first said no to Japan buying U.S. Steel. Now, he says they can buy some of it.

We don't know if the deal is done. We also don't know who will own the company. Nippon Steel still wants to buy U.S. Steel. They said they will give more money and keep the workers. They want the government to say yes.

Today, we are happy because this company will stay in America, Trump said at a U.S. Steel building. You will stay American, right?

Trump said more taxes on steel from other countries will help the steel business in the U.S. But prices could go up a lot.

Steel costs 16% more now. This started in January. The government says this.

In March 2025, steel cost $984 in the U.S. This was more expensive than in Europe ($690) or China ($392). The U.S. government said this. Last year, the U.S. made much more steel than it bought from other countries. Canada, Brazil, Mexico, and South Korea sold the most steel to the U.S.

Trump put taxes on things from other countries. This helped US steel companies. Nippon Steel wanted to buy US Steel because it was strong.

The steel workers were still not sure.

David McCall said the union is worried. He thinks this deal is bad for the country, the workers, and their towns.

Trump said America will keep the important company. This company helps make cars and keeps the country safe.

Trump wants to make new deals for the U.S. He also wants to make his voters happy, like the factory workers who voted for him.

U.S. Steel did not tell its investors about the new plan. Nippon Steel said they like the idea to work together, but they did not say what the plan is.

Government people know Nippon will buy U.S. Steel. Nippon will spend money on U.S. Steel factories in some states. Most of the leaders will be Americans. The U.S. government can say no to some things.

The steelworkers have different ideas about Nippon Steel buying U.S. Steel. But now, many workers think it is good. They believe U.S. Steel will close their factories near Pittsburgh.

Clifford Hammonds works at the plant. Trump talked at the plant. Clifford said the deal will help the old plant get better and make more things.

"We are using money to fix the factory. It is old and broken. We don't make enough things here. We need to fix the machines."

This is very important for Trump. Last year, he said he would stop the deal. He also said a company from another country cannot own U.S. Steel. Biden said the same thing.

Trump said he would help American factories. If U.S. Steel, a big company, does not do well, it could be bad for his party in some states.

Trump said no to the deal if U.S. Steel was not American. He said the main office will stay in Pittsburgh.

The president finished talking on Friday. He said thank you to the people who work with steel.

He said, "We will make our own metal and energy. We will build our country. We will use Pennsylvania steel for America.

Trump and other U.S. people talked about a Japanese company, Nippon Steel. This company wants to put more money in the U.S. They will build a new steel factory in America.

On Friday, some workers from U.S. Steel were with him on the stage. One worker was Jason Zugai. He is a leader for the local workers. This group of workers wanted Nippon Steel to buy U.S. Steel. But their main worker group did not want this.

Zugai's father lost his job. Zugai talked to important people. He wanted them to help the steel company. He thought the company would close if they did not help.

Zugai told Trump, "I knew you would help us." He said Nippon Steel wants to put $14 billion into making steel in the U.S. He thinks this will make a big difference for people.
