On Friday, train drivers in New Jersey stopped working. About 350,000 people in New Jersey and New York City had to find other ways to travel or stay home.
The workers stopped working because they did not agree on Thursday. This is the first time in 40 years they have stopped working like this. It happened after most workers said no to a deal last month.
"We gave them our idea, but they said no and left," said Tom Haas.
The boss of NJ Transit, Kris Kolluri, said they will stop talking for a short time.
He said, "I want to talk again soon. If they want to meet tonight, I will meet them. If they want to meet tomorrow, I will meet them. I think we can find a way to fix this problem. But do they want to find a way?"
Murphy said it's important to make a deal. The deal should be good for workers. It should also be easy for people in New Jersey to pay for.
The group said they talked about the deal for 15 hours. People may start protest lines at 4 a.m. on Friday.
NJ Transit has trains and buses in New Jersey. Many people use them to go to New York City. Now, the trains are stopped. People cannot take the train from New Jersey to New York, or to the Newark airport.
The bus company said they have plans for problems. They will have more buses. But the new buses will only help a little near train stations in New York. They start on Monday. The company will also pay other bus companies to drive from some parking places when many people travel.
But the bus company said the buses can't take as many people as the trains. Only a few train users can take the bus (20%). So, if there is a strike, the company asks people to work from home if they can.
Because of the problem, trains and buses to Shakira's shows in New Jersey were stopped on Thursday and Friday.
They met on Monday in Washington to talk about the problem. Someone helped them talk on Thursday. They will meet again on Sunday morning to talk more.
The main problem in talks is money. The workers want more pay, like other train workers. They want about $170,000 each year. Now, they get about $113,000.
But NJ Transit says the union is wrong. They say engineers earn $135,000 a year. Some earn more than $200,000.
Kolluri and Murphy said on Thursday that it's not just about agreeing on more money. It's about agreeing in a way that other groups won't ask for the same, which could make things hard for NJ Transit.
The government can stop the strike and make the workers agree to a deal. But this time, they don't want to do that, like they did in 2022 for the train strike.
The union at NJ Transit has fewer members now. Many members have left to work at other train companies for more money. There were 500 engineers, now there are 450.
