Le gouvernement américain a temporairement suspendu les rendez-vous pour les visas d'étudiants étrangers. Il souhaite examiner plus en détail leurs activités sur les réseaux sociaux. Cette mesure ne s'applique pas aux personnes qui avaient déjà un rendez-vous. Un document signé par le Secrétaire d'État Marco Rubio indique que les consulats ne doivent pas fixer de nouveaux rendez-vous pour les visas étudiants avant que de nouvelles directives sur le contrôle des réseaux sociaux ne soient publiées. Cette décision fait suite aux actions de l'administration Trump contre les étudiants internationaux, comme empêcher des étudiants de s'inscrire à l'Université Harvard ou annuler le statut légal de milliers d'étudiants déjà aux États-Unis. L'administration Biden a continué cette politique de vérification des comptes de réseaux sociaux pour les demandeurs de visa. Si cette interruption de la planification des visas étudiants dure, cela pourrait perturber les projets des étudiants pour les sessions d'été et d'automne. Une baisse du nombre d'étudiants internationaux pourrait aussi avoir un impact sur le budget des universités.
