On Thursday, the Supreme Court appeared likely to uphold the ban on President Donald Trump's restrictions concerning birthright citizenship, while also looking for a way to limit nationwide court orders.
It wasn't clear how this decision would actually work, but most judges worried about what might happen if the Trump administration was allowed, even for a short time, to deny citizenship to children born to people living in the US illegally.
As Attorney General John Sauer stated at the start of over two hours of arguments, judges have issued 40 nationwide injunctions since Trump began his second term in January.
The government has urgently asked the Court to deal with citizenship by birth, among other immigration-related issues.
During questioning by Judge Amy Coney Barrett and others, Sauer said the Trump administration might disagree with the case or possibly try to delay the group actions.
A decision should be made by the end of June.
