Federal officials say that at least 10 people in the U.S. are sick because of a listeria outbreak. This outbreak is linked to food that is ready to eat. A company is choosing to recall some of these products.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said on Saturday that government officials are looking into an illness outbreak. This outbreak is linked to food made by Fresh & Ready Foods LLC in San Fernando, California. The FDA reported that ten people got sick in California and Nevada, and they had to go to the hospital.
The agency said the products were sold in Arizona, California, Nevada, and Washington. You could buy them at different places like stores and restaurants, including hospitals, hotels, convenience stores, airports, and on airplanes.
Symptoms of Listeria often appear within two weeks after eating infected food. Mild symptoms might be fever, muscle pain, feeling sick, tiredness, being sick, and diarrhea, while serious symptoms could be headache, a stiff neck, not thinking clearly, problems with balance, and fits.
Government officials said they began looking into the recent illness outbreak last year but didn't have enough proof to find the cause of the infections.
Fresh & Ready Foods said in a press release that they quickly took action to solve the problem, like taking away equipment.
The FDA found that six of the 10 people who got sick were in the hospital before they got listeria. The FDA also found that food from Fresh & Ready Foods was given to patients in at least three of the hospitals where these people had been before.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said they got test samples from sick patients from December 2023 to September 2024.
Fresh & Ready willingly took back some of its products, which you can find by looking at the "use by" dates from April 22 to May 19 of this year. These products are sold under the names Fresh & Ready Foods, City Point Market Fresh Food to Go, and Fresh Take Crave Away.
