John Roberts said judges should be independent. This helps stop Congress or the president from having too much power.

Roberts, who is in charge of the main court and all the federal judges, said it is very important for judges to be able to decide things by themselves. He said this when he met with judges and lawyers in his hometown.

He said the Constitution's only new idea was to make three equal parts of the government. He also said this idea works only if the judges are free to make their own decisions.

The 70-year-old chief judge said mostly the same things he had said before. But when he answered questions from another judge, the 600 people there clapped. They were at an event to celebrate 125 years of federal courts in Western New York.

Someone asked Roberts about Trump and his friends who said judges should lose their jobs because of their decisions. Roberts said what he said before: 'You cannot make a judge lose their job just because you don't like a decision.'

Roberts also said he will not stop working soon because it is almost 20 years since he started working at the highest court in the country.

He came back to the city where he was born. This happened less than a week after Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson strongly said that attacking judges is wrong.

Speaking in Puerto Rico, Jackson said that judges in the country are facing many attacks and bad words every day.

Jackson said the attacks were a big problem that everyone knew about but didn't talk about, during a speech where he didn't say Trump's name.

The president, his helper Stephen Miller, and the rich man Elon Musk have spoken strongly against judges. These judges stopped some of Trump's plans. Sometimes, they said bad things about the judges personally. Trump said a judge who stopped people from being sent away, using an old law, was a "crazy person on the far left."

Someone sent pizzas to the homes of judges and their children to try and scare them. Some pizzas were sent using the name of Daniel Anderl, the son of Judge Esther Salas. A lawyer killed Daniel at his home in 2020.

Senator Dick Durbin said these deliveries were threats. He said they wanted to show they knew where the judge or their family lived.

Trump has mostly not criticized the high court. The court is deciding on some urgent requests because lower courts made decisions against him.

The president has had some good and some bad results with the court. On Tuesday, the court said his plan to stop transgender people from being in the military can continue while people are still arguing about it. The three judges did not agree with this plan.

But the court has also stopped some people from Venezuela from being sent back for a short time. The court said these people might be in gangs. They used an old law from the 1700s. And the judges also said people must have a chance to speak in court before they are sent away.

Next week, a court will talk about a plan from Trump. This plan would stop children born in the US from being citizens if their parents are in the country without permission. The government wants the court to change some rules made before. This would let the plan be used in many parts of the country while the court is still deciding about the cases.
