A court said a student from Turkey should come back to New England from a place where people are held. They will check if her rights were not respected and if she can be free.

Three judges in New York said no to the government asking for more time. They said Rumeysa Ozturk was right after listening to people on Tuesday. Ozturk has been in Louisiana for more than six weeks. This is because she wrote an article with someone else last year. The article said the school did not do a good job with the war in Gaza.

The court said Ozturk must go to ICE in Vermont by May 14.

The court said that Ozturk's immigration case started in Louisiana and is happening in a different place. He can be there using video.

A judge in Vermont said the 30-year-old student must come to the state. They will have meetings to see if she was kept illegally. Her lawyers say keeping her is against her rights. These rights include speaking freely and having a fair legal process.

She wanted to be free. A court meeting about this was planned for Friday in Burlington. There would be another meeting on May 22.

The government did not like the decision. They said the court in Louisiana should take care of Ozturk's case. The court stopped the move last week to think about what the government wanted. But on Wednesday, the court said they would not wait more time.

The higher court said the Vermont court was the right place for Ozturk to ask to be free. It also said the government did not show it would be hurt a lot. The court said it was more important for Ozturk to be at the meetings in Vermont than the cost or problems for the government.

The government says it would be hard for Ozturk to come to her immigration meeting in Louisiana by video. But the government agrees that Ozturk can be at the meeting by video, the court said.

We sent an email to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency to ask for their comments.

Immigration officers stopped Ozturk on a street near Boston on March 25. They took her to different places and then put her on a plane to a detention center. Her student visa was cancelled a few days before, but she didn't know about it, her lawyers said.

Ozturk's lawyers tried to help her in Massachusetts, but they could not find her or talk to her for more than a day after the police took her. Later, a judge moved the case to Vermont.

The court wrote that the government said this move was wrong, but the court did not agree.

Ozturk and three other students wrote an article in the school newspaper last year. They were unhappy because they felt the university did not listen to students who wanted changes. These students wanted the university to say that Palestinians were suffering a lot. They also wanted the university to show where it invested its money and to stop investing in companies connected to Israel.

A paper from the US government said Ozturk's visa was taken away. This happened because her actions could make things hard for Jewish students and show support for a group linked to terrorism. The paper said this could harm US plans with other countries. One action was writing an article with a group that was later not allowed on campus for a short time.

Someone from the Department of Homeland Security said in March that Ozturk helped Hamas. Hamas is a group that the U.S. calls a terrorist group. The person did not give proof.

"People should not be put in prison for their political ideas," said Esha Bhandari, one of Ozturk’s lawyers. "Rumeysa Ozturk has been in prison for too long. We are happy the court stopped the government from keeping her away from her friends and her lawyers while she tries to get out of prison."
