Some Republicans in the House seem to be changing their minds about cutting the Medicaid program a lot. They are not changing their minds about all the cuts. This is because some Republicans in the middle do not want to stop the cheap health care for people in their areas.
A new report says that millions of Americans might lose their health insurance because the government wants to spend less money on healthcare.
The CBO report said that if these options are chosen, fewer people will have Medicaid, and more people will not have health insurance.
The results made people unsure if the House Speaker, Mike Johnson, could pass the bill by the date he chose.
Politicians are getting more worried, especially because people are anxious about the economy. This is partly because of Trump's policies, like the trade war. This war could mean higher prices, fewer things to buy in shops, and people losing their jobs all over the country. A key part of the plan is for the Republican party to continue the tax cuts that began in 2017 and will finish later this year. But they want to cut spending on other programs to help pay for these tax cuts. They also want to stop the country's debt and deficits from growing.
All week, Johnson has been meeting privately with groups of Republicans in his office.
The Democrats asked for the report and used the information quickly.
A report from a government office says that Republican plans for healthcare could mean millions of people lose their health insurance. A politician said this report shows they were right.
Republicans in the House of Representatives said after a meeting on Tuesday night that Speaker Johnson and other Republican leaders would not try to change some of the rules for states to get money for healthcare for poor people.
Jeff Van Drew, a politician from New Jersey, said the changes to the health program for poor people will not happen.
Republican politician Nick LaLota from New York said that Trump does not want to cut Medicaid. He said that Republicans now mostly agree to cut Medicaid in other areas.
LaLota had other ideas. He said people getting Medicaid should have to work. He also said they should check if they can get help two times a year, not just one time. And he said immigrants who are in the U.S. without papers should not get help.
But some Republicans want to spend less money. They want bigger cuts because they are worried about the high costs from tax changes.
Medicaid is a program managed together by individual states and the federal government, and it provides healthcare coverage for 71 million adults.
Republicans want to spend less government money on the program. One idea is to pay less for people's health care. Sometimes the government pays up to 90% of the cost.
They are also thinking about putting a limit on how much the government spends on each person in Medicaid, but that idea seems less popular now with the people who make laws.
The CBO said these changes could save a lot of money. But, about 10 million people might lose their Medicaid health care.
It looks like they are no longer an option.
Republicans are still considering other changes for Medicaid. One idea is to put limits on how states tax doctors and hospitals. This tax helps states get more money from the government. This could save a lot of money, but a report says it might cause 8 million people to lose their health insurance.
