President Donald Trump plans to choose Dr. Casey Means to be the surgeon general. Dr. Means is a doctor who now works as a health and wellness expert. She has a close relationship with Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who leads Health and Human Services. Trump made this choice after he withdrew his first person for this important health job.
Trump said online on Wednesday that Means is very qualified, using the slogan 'Make America Healthy Again.' He added that she will work to get rid of long-term illnesses and make Americans healthier and happier.
"Her school achievements and her work are truly outstanding," Trump said. "Dr. Casey Means could be one of the best Surgeon Generals in United States History."
Because of this, Trump stopped considering Janette Nesheiwat for the job. She used to write about medicine for Fox News. This was at least the second person Trump chose for a health job who was not considered by the Senate. Nesheiwat was supposed to have a hearing with the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions on Thursday to confirm her for the job.
Means and her brother, Calley Means, who was a lobbyist before, were important advisers for Kennedy's try to become president in 2024, which didn't look like it would succeed. They also helped him agree to support Trump last summer. Means and her brother showed up with some of Trump's strongest supporters and were spoken well of by conservative commentator Tucker Carlson and podcaster Joe Rogan. Calley Means is now an adviser at the White House. He is often on television talking about putting limits on help for people who need it, taking fluoride out of water, and other things that are part of the "Make America Healthy Again" plan.
Casey Means has no experience in government and left her training to become a surgeon because she didn't believe in traditional medicine anymore. She started a health technology company called Levels, which helps people check their blood sugar and other measurements. She also earns money from products like dietary supplements, creams, and teas that she promotes on her social media.
In interviews and articles, Means and her brother talk about many different things that have caused the nation's health problems. These include powerful food companies that have made Americans addicted to unhealthy food. This means people then need daily medicines from drug companies to control their weight problems, diabetes, and other long-term illnesses.
Most health experts agree that the American diet, which includes many processed foods, contributes to obesity and other health problems. However, Means also connects changes in diet and lifestyle to many other conditions like infertility, Alzheimer's, depression, and erectile dysfunction.
Many long-term health problems that Western medicine treats happen because our cells are harmed by the way we live today, Means said in a book she wrote with her brother in 2024.
Means has mostly avoided Kennedy’s unpopular ideas about vaccines. But on her website, she has asked for more studies on how safe they are and suggests making it easier for people to sue drug companies if they are hurt by vaccines. Since the late 1980s, US law has protected these companies from being sued to help them develop vaccines without the risk of expensive lawsuits from individuals.
She studied to be a surgeon at Stanford University, but she is now popular online because she criticizes standard medicine and suggests healthy food and lifestyle changes to help people with conditions like obesity and diabetes.
If Means is confirmed as surgeon general, he would be responsible for helping to promote Kennedy’s big MAHA plan. This plan includes taking out many additives and chemicals from U.S. foods, getting rid of conflicts of interest in government agencies, and encouraging healthier foods in school lunches and other food programs.
Nesheiwat, who was Trump's first choice, is a medical director for a company that offers urgent medical care in New York. She is often on television to share her medical views and thoughts. She is a strong supporter of Trump and puts pictures of them together on social media. Nesheiwat is also the sister-in-law of Mike Waltz, who used to be a national security advisor. Trump has suggested that Waltz should be his ambassador to the United Nations.
However, she was recently criticized by Laura Loomer, a strong supporter of Trump who helped remove several people from the president's National Security Council. Loomer wrote on X earlier this week that the surgeon general should not be someone who supports the COVID vaccine, got their job because of family connections, is involved in a lawsuit about medical mistakes, and did not study medicine in the US.
Last month, a journalist named Anthony Clark said that Nesheiwat got her medical degree from a university in St. Maarten. But she had said it was from the University of Arkansas. The White House stopped her nomination because they were not sure if she would be approved. This is according to someone who knew the reason but did not want their name used.
Nesheiwat wrote on social media Wednesday that she is happy to keep supporting President Trump and work closely with Secretary Kennedy in an important job to Make America Healthy Again! She also said that her main focus is still to make all Americans healthier and improve their lives, and that goal has not changed.
The Surgeon General is like the country's main doctor. They are in charge of 6,000 people in the U.S. Public Health Service Corps. They can also give official warnings about things that could be bad for public health.
In March, the White House decided not to choose Dave Weldon, a former Republican congressman from Florida, to lead the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He had doubts about vaccines, which concerned some important Republican senators. He withdrew after the White House told him he would not have enough support to be confirmed.
