A court said a student from Turkey can go back to New England from a place in Louisiana. They will see if she was treated okay and if she can be free.
A court in New York said yes to Rumeysa Ozturk. She was in Louisiana. She wrote about the school's reaction to the war.
The court said Ozturk must go to ICE in Vermont by May 14.
Ozturk has a court case about moving to a new country. The case is in a different place, but he can join from his home, the court said.
A judge in Vermont said a student must come to court. Her lawyers say the police kept her illegally. They say her rights were broken.
She had a meeting in Burlington on Friday. The next meeting is on May 22. She wants to be free before that.
The court said Ozturk's case is in Louisiana.
The court said the man can go to the hearings.
They say it is hard for Ozturk to go to her court meeting by video. But they say she can go by video if she must leave the country.
Someone sent an email to the U.S. Immigration office to ask a question.
Police stopped Ozturk on the street. They took her to different places in two states. Then they put her on a plane to a center. Her student papers were not okay. She did not know this. Her lawyers said this.
Her lawyers went to court in Massachusetts. They did not know where she was. They could not talk to her for a long time after she was caught. A judge moved the case to Vermont.
The government says this was not right. The court says the government is wrong.
Ozturk was one of four students. They wrote in the school paper last year. They talked about what the university did. The students wanted the university to speak about Palestine. They also wanted the university to show its money and stop giving money to companies linked to Israel.
A paper said Ozturk could not come to the U.S. because she did bad things for the U.S. and Jewish students.
They said Ozturk helped a group called Hamas. The U.S. government says this group is dangerous.
People should not go to prison for their ideas about politics. Rumeysa Ozturk should not be in prison. We are happy the court said she can see her family, friends, and lawyer. This helps her try to leave prison.
