Donald Trump said he will make taxes on steel from other countries higher, to help steel workers in Pennsylvania.

Later, he wrote on Truth Social. He said the tax on aluminum will be 50%. He also said these taxes will start on Wednesday.

Trump spoke at a steel factory near Pittsburgh. He said a company from Japan will put money into the American steel company. He will give more information later.

Trump is in Washington. He said he must agree to the deal.

He said, "I need to say 'yes' to the last paper with Nippon. We haven't seen it. But they said they will give a lot of money, and it is a big plan.

Trump first said Japan could not buy U.S. Steel. But last week, he changed his mind. Now, Japan will own some of U.S. Steel.

We don't know if the deal is finished. His team helped with it. We also don't know who will own the company. The Japanese company still wants to buy the American company. They will give more money to the factories. They also said they will not fire workers or close factories. They need the government to say yes to the purchase.

Today, we are here for a big deal. This deal will help this old American company stay American, Trump said. "You will stay American, yes?"

Trump said more taxes on steel from other countries will make the steel business in the U.S. stronger. But this could make steel more expensive.

Steel costs more now. It is 16% more expensive. This started in January when Trump became president. The government said this.

In March 2025, steel cost $984 in the U.S. In Europe, it was $690, and in China, it was $392. The U.S. made more steel than it bought last year. Canada, Brazil, Mexico, and South Korea sold the most steel to the U.S.

Old rules helped American steel. A Japanese company wanted to buy it because it was strong.

The steel workers were still not sure.

David McCall, the boss, said the union is worried. He said if U.S. Steel joins a company from another country, it could be bad for the country, the workers, and their towns.

Trump said the company will stay American. It is important for the country's cars and safety.

Trump wants to make new deals and bring new jobs to the U.S. He wants to make his voters happy, especially workers. He promised to help factories in the U.S.

U.S. Steel did not tell people about the new plan. Nippon Steel said they like the plan, but they did not share the details.

Some people say Nippon will buy U.S. Steel. Nippon will put money into U.S. Steel factories in some states. Most of the leaders will be Americans. The U.S. government can say no to some things the company wants to do.

The steelworkers in the union have different ideas about Nippon Steel buying their company. At first, they did not like it. But now, they think it is better because U.S. Steel might close their factories in Pittsburgh.

Clifford Hammonds works at the plant. Trump talked at the plant. Clifford said the deal will help the old plant get better and make more things.

"We are using money to fix the factory. It is old and broken. We don't make enough things here. We need to fix the machines," said Hammonds.

This is very important for Trump. Last year, he said he would stop this. He also said a company from another country cannot own U.S. Steel. Biden said the same thing.

Trump said he wants to help American factories. If U.S. Steel, a big company, has problems, it could be bad for his party in some states during the next elections.

Trump said on Sunday he does not want the deal if U.S. Steel is not American. He said the main office will stay in Pittsburgh.

On Friday, the president said thank you to the steelworkers.

He said, "We will make our own metal and energy. We will make our country strong. We will use steel from Pennsylvania to help America.

Trump and other US leaders talked about Nippon Steel. Nippon Steel wants to spend $14 billion. They also want to build a new steel factory in the US.

On Friday, some U.S. Steel workers were with him on stage. Jason Zugai was one of them. He is a leader for the local steelworkers. His group wants Nippon Steel to buy U.S. Steel, but the main union does not.

Zugai's father lost his job. Zugai talked to important people. He wanted to help the steel company. He thought the company would close its factories near Pittsburgh.

Zugai told Trump, "I knew you would help us." He said Nippon Steel will put $14 billion into making steel in the U.S. He thinks this will change lives.
