Carnegie Mellon University made an announcement on Wednesday.

A man named Ken Griffin leads a hedge fund.

He is giving $3 billion to the school.

Most of the money will pay for a new campus in Miami.

The campus will work on big problems in society.

The school said this is the largest gift ever to a U.S. university.

Griffin's gift has $2 billion for a new campus.

The campus is 35 acres.

It is in Miami's Wynwood neighborhood.

That area is just north of downtown.

About 3,500 students will study there.

Some will be undergraduates.

Some will be master's students.

Some will be doctoral students.

Building will start next year.

The campus will not have normal majors.

It will focus on big challenge areas.

These include human health and national security.

They also include energy and climate resilience.

They also include advanced manufacturing.

The rest of the money will be split evenly.

Half will go to the computer science program.

That program is at the Pittsburgh campus.

It will get a new name: Griffin.

The other half will go to other projects.

The school has not named them yet.

Farnam Jahanian is the president of Carnegie Mellon.

He said AI makes the school rethink things.

The school must rethink how it teaches students.

It must rethink how it does research.

It must rethink how it works with others.

Griffin is a big donor to the Republican Party.

He started a company called Citadel.

He owns a home in Miami near the water.

He said he wants to bring Carnegie Mellon to Miami.

He said this puts Miami at the heart of human and scientific progress.

He is joining the school's Board of Trustees.
