Some Democratic leaders want to be president.
They are moving fast to show they care about AI dangers.
California Governor Gavin Newsom signed an order on Friday.
It makes a California law work faster.
The law says AI companies must have independent checks.
It also says companies must have "kill switches."
These let them shut down their systems.
Newsom spoke on his podcast.
He said California will do what it can.
But he said Washington must do its job.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro gave a speech one day earlier.
He talked about steps he is taking in his state.
He also said states cannot do much alone.
AI is a global technology.
AI leaders have warned about terrible dangers.
These leaders include Dario Amodei, Sam Altman and Elon Musk.
President Trump said the warnings are a "HOAX."
He said he is the only control AI needs.
Democrats are answering with speeches and new laws.
Georgia Senator Jon Ossoff said a strong president would protect the country.
He would also push for an AI treaty.
Arizona Senator Mark Kelly spoke to Politico.
He said he will introduce a bill.
The bill would create a fund.
AI companies would pay into it.
The money would help workers who lose their jobs.
Shapiro asked for federal rules.
He wants outside checks and openness.
Polls show a growing split.
A June Pew Research Center poll found something.
Democrats are more likely than Republicans to be "more concerned than excited" about AI.
About half of U.S. adults say the same.
About 7 in 10 U.S. adults think AI will cause job losses in the next 20 years.
That is up 7 percentage points since 2024.
