Some Democrats want to be president.
They are moving fast.
They want to show they care about AI risks.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed an order on Friday.
It speeds up a California law.
The law makes AI companies have independent oversight.
It also makes "kill switches."
These let developers shut down their systems.
Newsom spoke on his podcast.
He said California will do what it can.
But Washington needs to do its job.
Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro gave a speech a day earlier.
He talked about steps he is taking locally.
He also said states have clear limits.
They cannot fully control a global technology.
AI leaders have warned of big risks.
These leaders include Dario Amodei, Sam Altman and Elon Musk.
President Trump dismissed the warnings.
He called them a "HOAX."
He said he is the only control AI needs.
Democrats are responding with speeches and laws.
Georgia Sen. Jon Ossoff spoke.
He said a capable president would secure the country.
He would also push for an AI treaty.
Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly spoke to Politico.
He said he will introduce a bill.
The bill would create a fund.
AI companies would pay into it.
The money would help workers who lose jobs.
Shapiro called for federal rules.
He wants third-party oversight and transparency.
Polling shows a growing divide.
A June Pew Research Center poll found something.
Democrats are more likely than Republicans to be "more concerned than excited" about AI.
About half of U.S. adults say the same.
About 7 in 10 U.S. adults think AI will cause job losses.
This will happen in the next 20 years.
That number is up 7 percentage points since 2024.
