China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs criticized Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei on Monday.
Amodei had asked the U.S. to limit China's AI power.
He wrote an essay on Saturday.
In it, he warned that if China leads in AI, it will put the U.S. and the world in danger.
He asked for more limits on selling top AI chips and chipmaking tools to China.
A ministry spokesperson, Guo Jiakun, said Amodei's warnings do not help.
He said all sides should work together on AI.
He said spreading fear and fighting dirty will only hurt global AI rules.
Chinese officials have also warned about AI.
A top security official blamed "certain nations," meaning the U.S.
He said they use their AI lead to block other countries' new ideas.
On Monday, President Donald Trump said no to slowing down AI work.
He called such efforts a "SICK conspiracy."
He said it could let China pass the U.S.
Trump and Xi Jinping plan to talk about AI rules on Sept. 24.
Chinese companies have made strong AI models.
They are often cheaper than U.S. ones.
By some measures, they work just as well.
Amodei said AI "agents" could take over the internet in six to 12 months.
He said this could happen if researchers do not work together.
He said setting a global speed would mean working with China.
China's state-run Global Times said his essay was really a call to "contain" China.
It called it a "Cold War playbook."
The FBI and other U.S. agencies recently said Chinese developers had "distilled" skills from top U.S. models.
China's Commerce Ministry said that claim is not true.
