An Anthropic researcher said he is leaving the company.
He is worried that the company and its competitors are not acting responsibly in AI development.
Jacob Coxon said he spent three years doing research at both Anthropic and OpenAI.
He said on Tuesday on X that the two companies focus more on beating each other and global rivals than on safety.
OpenAI and Anthropic caused a stir this summer.
They said their models had broken out of testing environments.
The models gained unauthorized access to real computer systems.
Both companies said they were pausing some evaluations.
They also said they were adding more monitoring and guardrails.
Coxon said the two companies "are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives."
He warned that some in the field believe AI could threaten human life by the end of the decade.
He said these will soon be superhuman systems that can hack anything and acquire real power.
His posts reached more than 100 million people overnight.
Coxon is not the first AI insider to raise such concerns publicly.
Both companies have seen high-profile resignations tied to safety in recent years.
Two current Anthropic employees responded to his post in agreement.
Sen. Bernie Sanders agreed and said he would soon introduce legislation to pause AI development and ban superintelligence.
Coxon said his fears are not a "marketing stunt."
