Huawei Technologies faces a criminal trial in New York.

Prosecutors accuse the Chinese tech company of stealing technology.

They also say Huawei plotted to steal U.S. trade secrets and commit wire and bank fraud.

Jury selection started Tuesday afternoon.

Opening statements are expected no earlier than Wednesday.

The indictment also says Huawei did business in North Korea despite U.S. sanctions.

It says the company installed surveillance equipment that helped Iran spy on protesters during 2009 demonstrations.

Huawei has tried to get the case dismissed.

It argues the allegations are unclear and wrongly extend U.S. authority abroad.

The company said the prosecutors’ story is “demonstrably false.”

It added that innovation and respect for intellectual property drive its success.

Huawei is the world’s biggest supplier of wireless network gear.

But it is banned from selling equipment to U.S. carriers over security fears.

Canada and Britain have also blacklisted the company.

It has moved into chipmaking as demand for microprocessors grows with the artificial intelligence boom.

The U.S. announced the criminal charges in early 2019 during President Donald Trump’s first term.

Prosecutors accused Huawei of using a Hong Kong shell company, Skycom, to sell equipment to Iran.

This broke sanctions.

They also charged its chief financial officer, Meng Wanzhou, with fraud.

She misled HSBC about Iran dealings.

Meng was arrested in Canada in 2018 but released in September 2021 in a prisoner swap.

China has called the U.S. actions “economic bullying.”
