The police say a former food delivery driver worked with others to steal over $2.5 million from DoorDash by making them pay for deliveries that never happened.

The US Attorney's office said that Sayee Chaitanya Reddy Devagiri admitted in a San Jose court on Tuesday that he was guilty of working with others to commit wire fraud.

Federal prosecutors say that Devagiri, a 30-year-old who lives in Newport Beach, California, worked with three other people to trick a delivery company in San Francisco in 2020 and 2021.

The prosecutor said that Devagiri used customer accounts to make big orders. Then, he used employee logins to get into DoorDash's system. He changed the orders to driver accounts that he and his friends controlled. Also, he made fake driver accounts say they delivered orders when they didn't. Officials said he tricked DoorDash's system to pay these accounts for deliveries that never happened.

Devagiri is the third person found guilty in this case. He could be sentenced to 20 years in prison and pay a fine of $250,000. He will be in court again on September 16.
