A former food delivery driver pleaded guilty to conspiring with accomplices to defraud DoorDash of over $2.5 million by inducing the company to disburse payments for fictitious deliveries, according to federal prosecutors.

Devagiri, un treintañero oriundo de Newport Beach, California, reconoció ante las autoridades federales su participación, junto a otros tres individuos, en una trama orquestada entre 2020 y 2021 para defraudar a la empresa de reparto radicada en San Francisco.

Prosecutors elucidated that Devagiri exploited client accounts to initiate high-value orders, subsequently leveraging an employee's credentials to illicitly access DoorDash's software and manually reassign orders to delivery accounts under his and his accomplices' control. Officials allege that Devagiri further orchestrated the fraudulent marking of orders as delivered by these compromised delivery accounts, despite the lack of actual delivery, and manipulated DoorDash's IT infrastructure to remunerate these fictitious accounts for phantom deliveries.

Subsequently, Devagiri purportedly exploited DoorDash's software, manipulating order statuses from "delivered" back to "in progress" and manually reassigning these orders to accounts controlled by him and his accomplices, effectively restarting the delivery cycle, according to the prosecution.

In November 2023, the former employee implicated in the scheme pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud, acknowledging his complicity in the orchestration of the illicit operation, as disclosed by prosecuting attorneys.
